Tips for Managing Work Related Stress
Stress in the workplace has a detrimental effect on not only the employee experiencing it but also the company as a whole. The problem of work related stress is one that is persistent and therefore must be addressed. There are plenty of strategies that can be implemented when managing work related stress. These strategies can be put in practice in the office and at home. The first part of eliminating work related stress is identifying the source of the problem.
For example, if you are dealing with a heavy workload this could be identified as a source of stress. Maybe you dislike your commute, or even a coworker that you see every day. These things are also sources of workplace stress. Once you've identified what is causing your stress you can take positive action to resolve it. Let's say you are feeling stressed because you have too much work to do and not enough time in which to do it. You could figure out a way to reduce your workload, such as directly talking to your boss or delegating some work if you can. If the stressor is interpersonal in nature, taking a direct approach can often help you resolve the problem.
An example would be if you have a coworker that annoys you by playing the radio on their desk too loudly. Rather than suffering day in and day out, you could assertively yet respectively express your discomfort and ask your coworker to turn the music down. Most likely, they will be happy to do so and the problem will be solved. Sometimes you cannot always confront and eradicate workplace stress. In this case, there are other ways you can at least avoid harmful effects from the stress.
Getting enough exercise is crucial for managing work related stress. Exercise keeps you healthy and helps your body make feel-good chemicals that can relieve and repair the damaging effects of chronic stress. Eating a nutritious diet is also important. Living a healthy lifestyle can help you feel calmer and more in control of your life. Finding activities you enjoy is another great stress-buster. By enjoying a hobby when not at work you can alleviate the stress that your job piles on you. When you're at work, you can reduce tension by taking walks during your lunch break if the weather is good or relaxing for a few moments with a soothing cup of tea before heading to a meeting. Little steps like these can make a big difference in your stress level.
