Ethical Issues Inherent with Workplace Stress
For some careers, it is important to recognize and confront ethical issues inherent with workplace stress. There are certain jobs in which ethics will be a factor on a regular basis, and you must learn to deal with the stress caused by this or you may suffer detrimental effects. An example of this would be in the medical profession. There may be lots of ethical dilemmas that you come across in the course of a day. Psychotherapy is another field where you will be dealing with ethical issues. Even the business world is filled with situations where ethics plays a big role.
You will need to take a moral inventory for yourself and determine what your framework of ethics is. In what areas are you rigid and in what areas are you flexible? For example, if you are working in the medical field you will need to ask yourself questions about everything from substance abuse to abortion. You must know where you stand, where there is room for adaptation and where there is not. There may be some areas where you are uncompromising and others where you are willing to consider another point of view.
No matter what career you are in, it is absolutely crucial to recognize and live by your personal code of ethics. If you are feeling the effects of stress from doing so, there are ways to help yourself. Working with a skilled psychotherapist or psychiatrist can help you effectively manage the stress you feel when dealing with work-related ethical issues. There are even life coaches designed to help you manage your career and the stress that comes along with it in a way that is personalized to your needs.
Ethical issues inherent with workplace stress are unavoidable in certain jobs. However, the conflicts you deal with are a price you are willing to pay in order to work in the career field you've chosen. By making yourself aware of the struggles you may face and preparing for them ahead of time, you give yourself a better chance of reacting to ethical workplace stress in a healthy way when it arises. If you are in a field such as medicine, law or business and have obtained a college education you have likely already learned quite a bit about ethics in your chosen profession. The key is to effectively translate what you've learned into the real world.
