Managing Stress and Relationship Problems

Relationships are an important part of the human experience. We all have them, and while they can be a source of unparalleled joy they can also be a source of stress. Managing stress and relationship problems effectively are crucial to not only the relationship in question but also your personal health. Stress is not only damaging to your mind, but your body as well. When you are in a state of constant stress, your body secretes stress hormones that lower your immune system and cause a variety of different ailments from tension headaches to irritable bowels.

Relationships are right up there with money when it comes to top causes of stress. When learning to manage the stress related to a relationship, you have to take an approach that fits with your individual circumstances. There are no cookie-cutter solutions when it comes to alleviating relationship based stress. However, there are a few strategies that everyone can use to manage stress that is caused by an interpersonal relationship. The first step is to identify what aspects of the relationship cause you the most stress.

Once you've pinpointed what bothers you the most, you can work on fixing it. Because relationships involve two people, you must not only think about yourself but the other person as well. You must communicate your feelings and needs to the other person in a way that is assertive and respectful. When you are assertive you state your needs in a way that is clear, firm, yet kind. You don't yell at the person and you don't beat around the bush. For example, if your best friend is always late when the two of you meet for lunch you could say something like, 'I love our lunch dates, but I really wish you'd get here a little earlier.' Communicating with 'I' statements is preferable to taking an offensive stance and saying something like 'You're always late.'

While you can't always eliminate stress in your relationships, you can learn effective strategies for managing stress and relationship problems. You may want to see a psychotherapist or counselor to learn these strategies or read some information on this subject. One great book that talks about reducing stress in a love relationship by learning your partner's language is The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate by Gary Chapman.
